Chapter Nine ~ A Slayer Obsession

Giles got up from Angel’s chair when he noticed them filing into the office. “Here Candy, please sit down.” He motioned to the office chair that he just vacated. “I want you to see this.”

Spike made his way around Giles and stood behind the chair so he could see, too. Giles was looking at Spike kind of funny. Perhaps it was the wife beater shirt. It was a distraction for her too. Angel and Buffy sat on the couch.

“Angel was spot on. Look here, Candy,” Giles pointed to a place on the screen. It took her eyes a minute to adjust to the bright computer screen.

There she was in black and white. She looked back at Spike who sucked in a breath when he saw her name in the log.

“Well I’ll be. My girlfriend’s a slayer turned vampire with a soul. That’s just…neat,” He smiled at her.

She turned back to the screen. It was unbelievable. “Don’t sound so proud, Spike. I’m probably the worst slayer in history. I lasted, what, less than 24 hours before I was brought down by a vamp.”

“She’s probably right,” Buffy joined in. “But to be fair, I had no clue I had been activated until my watcher showed up. I would have been vamp food like you if I had met one before my watcher arrived.”

“Okay, but I still don’t have an answer to my original question.” Candy wanted to move away from her apparent failure and focus on something else. “Why the soul? I’m sure other slayers were turned without souls.”

“Not that we know of,” Giles said. He explained that part of watcher training focuses on procedures in the case of a slayer dying with vampire bites. In that case, a watcher is to ensure that the slayer not raise as a vampire. The methods are at the discretion of the watcher. Decapitation before burial, burn the body, or watch guard over the grave for three days with the intent to stake the risen fledgling if it so happened.

“And each vampire is taught by his sire to avoid slayers at all costs. She is the vampire’s boogie man. It is also widely accepted that it is extreme taboo to turn a slayer if you happen kill one,” Angel added.

“Dru and I drained the first slayer that I killed,” Spike stated. He tried to sound apologetic, but still Buffy cringed. “I had no thought of turning her. Even so, Dru ordered me away from the body and absolutely forbid me from turning her. She said it would mean our deaths absolutely.”

Giles handed Candy a printout of the web page with her information. “I thought you might want this.”

She thanked him and stood up. Buffy and Angel stood as well.

“If you don’t mind, Angel, I’d like to stay here and do some more research and make some calls,” said Giles.

“That’s fine,” Angel said. Giles was already glued to the computer screen with blood shot eyes and in research land.

It was late afternoon on the next day when Candy made her way down the stairs. She was hungry, but she didn’t want to wake Spike. She smiled as she crossed the lobby, thinking about him. They’d gone back to the suite the night before and she had been feeling pretty low. Spike had promised to take her mind off everything. He delivered on that promise and then some. She’d just get her meal and bring him some breakfast in bed.

She pushed the doors open and walked in, but instantly regretted it. She mentally kicked herself for not looking through the circular glass windows on the doors before going in. Buffy sat at the table alone, eating a carton of yogurt. She looked up when she heard the doors swish open, but when she saw who it was, she looked down and continued eating.

Candy noticed that Buffy watched from the corner of her eye as she prepared some blood. She poured the warmed blood in a thermos and grabbed two mugs.

“So when do you plan to go back to Cleveland?” Buffy asked her. Candy turned and stared at her. If she left now, it probably wouldn't be soon enough for Buffy. She was definitely jealous. Buffy looked back at her yogurt.

Candy sat down and poured some of the contents of the thermos into her mug. “Why? So you can have them both? Or play with Spike’s head some more?” She knew she was being catty, but she couldn't seem to help herself.

Buffy completely ignored Candy’s last remarks. “Faith tells me that you have been a real help to her and Robin.”

“Faith is the one who sent me out here. She thinks I don’t know what she was up to. She was trying to play match maker, you know.” She knew that would get her attention. “I can see the logic. Get the only two souled vampires that exist together.”

“And you had no interest in Angel?”

“He’s a good looking guy with a nice body.” She smiled when Buffy frowned. She was getting under the girl’s skin and it was fun. “But I was blinded by a shock of platinum blond hair, gorgeous blue eyes and dangerously sexy cheekbones.” She sighed for effect and repressed an evil grin when the Slayer narrowed her eyes.

“Spike was obsessed with me for years, you know,” Buffy said quickly.

Candy gave her a smug smile and said calmly, “yes I know. He seems to have a thing for slayers, doesn’t he? I’m very glad to be his latest obsession and I plan to be the last,” she stated in a firm tone.

“You really like him that much?” Buffy seemed surprised.

“Yes. It’s been almost sixty years since I was turned and by choice I spent most of that time alone. I’ve never met anyone quite like Spike.” She closed her eyes for a moment and smiled. “He’s amazing.”

At that moment Mr. Amazing met Angel as they came out of their rooms at the same time. He had reached for Candy before he even opened his eyes, but only got a handful of pillow. He dressed quickly and was on his way to look for her.

“Evening,” Spike said in greeting.

“Spike,” Angel quietly said back.

They stood with their doors open like that for a time. Spike was the first to move. He closed his door and leaned casually against the wall. Angel closed his door then and mirrored Spike's stance across from him.

When Spike could no longer stand the silence, he said, “Crazy day yesterday, yeah?”

“Yes, with Candy finding out about her slayer past. Not to mention Buffy's surprise visit,” Angel agreed.

“I'm in love with her,” Spike stated. Why he chose to share this information with Angel of all people he couldn't really say. It just had to be said; to be out there.

“Oh please, Spike. You are the last thing Buffy needs right now.” Angel rubbed his temples.

“Not her you git. Candy. Sure I'll always have a place here,” Spike made a fist over his heart, “for Buffy. She means a lot to me. But I'm in love with Candy.”

“You haven't known her long enough to fall in love with her,” Angel told him.

“How long was it after you met Buffy before you realize you were in love with her?” Spike countered. He couldn't believe Angel's attitude. You'd think he'd be happy if Spike was out of the picture, so he could have Buffy all to himself.

“Not long. I get your point,” was all he'd concede.

“I don't know if I should tell her or if it’s too soon? I don't want to scare her away.” He concentrated on his nails and chipped some of the polish off his thumb.

Spike felt increasingly uncomfortable as Angel studied him in silence. Was he really asking him for advice? “I'm no expert on these things as you well know,” Angel told him, “but I will say this. If she's not in love with you now, it won't be long before she is.”

“Why do you think that?” Spike asked hopefully.

“The way she looks at you. Buffy used to look at me that way, you know. Like she worshiped me,” he said wistfully. Spike felt bad for him. Even if Buffy felt the same way about Angel, he couldn't act upon it.

“Really? You think so?” he asked. If that was the case he'd tell her soon.

“I'm happy for you, Spike. I really am. At least someone in the family has the possibility for a happy ending,” he said dryly.

He was feeling generous then. Knowing Angel wished him well; it did something for him. He didn't want to think what it meant, but he was glad for it still.

“There's got to be something that can be done about you and Buffy,” Spike said. “There is magicks out there strong enough to bring a person or vamp back from an unnatural death. I'm sure there's got to be some way to remove the curse.”

“If there is, no one's found it yet. Besides, Buffy is barely speaking to me. I'm not so sure she'd care if the curse was lifted,” he said sadly.

“My track record speaks for it self that I, too, am no expert at love, but I am an expert on Buffy,” Spike began. “Don't give me that look. It's true!” he added when Angel looked at him with a death glare. “Hear me out. You've got to stop making decisions for Buffy. She's a strong, independent woman. She doesn't need you going about deciding what's best for her. Throw yourself on her mercy and beg for forgiveness. Let her know she's in charge and that you'll do anything for her.”

“I hate to say it,” Angel said grudgingly, “but you’re probably right.”

That was just too weird coming from Angel. “I'm feeling peckish,” Spike quipped. “Should we go get a bite to eat?” He slapped Angel on the shoulder.

“Sure,” Angel said as they walked towards the stairs.

“You think maybe that dance studio on the corner does take out?” Spike joked.

“Spike.”

“Young girls in tights, with their blood rushing through their veins after a good work out. Makes the fangs want to drop, doesn't it?” he wistfully asked. It was hard to keep a straight face.

“Shut up, Spike!” Angel growled.

“I don't believe you,” Buffy stated. “There is no way that you spent the last sixty years alone.”

“Sure I met lots of men. I seemed to attract them easy enough. But they bored me or if it was a vamp, when they realized I was different they were out of there. And humans, well it’s hard to keep something going when you can't go out in the daylight or you're always worried that he'll realize you have no heartbeat. No, I learned quickly to keep people and vamps at a distance.”

“And yet there's very little distance between you and Spike,” Buffy noted sarcastically.

“Spike told me the other day that he fit perfectly in my world,” Candy said. She wanted Buffy to know that he was off limits. She was going to stake her claim on him in no uncertain terms. “He was right and I intend to make damn sure he stays in my world.”

“Obsessed much?” Buffy asked and ate the last bite of her yogurt.

“Call it what you like. Just so long as we're clear on this. He's mine. Stay away from him,” Candy warned.

Before Buffy could come back with something, Dawn blew into the kitchen. She stopped, crossed her arms and fixed Buffy with an angry stare.

“What?” Buffy asked and gave Candy one last glare before fully paying attention to her sister.

“I told you not to eat anything. I promised Gunn I'd make a huge home cooked meal. And here you are snacking!” She marched to the cupboards and began banging pots and pans around.

“Ah, good evening ladies,” said Spike as he came in followed by Angel. “There you are,” he told Candy. “I was wondering where you'd gone off to.” He gave her a peck on the cheek.

“I was on my way up with some breakfast,” she said as she poured him a cup of blood from the thermos. “How about you Angel? I warmed plenty.”

“Thanks.” Angel sat down next to Buffy. “Did you get enough rest?” he asked her. She nodded.

“Thanks, luv,” Spike said. Candy handed them both their mugs. Spike sat down. Buffy shot Candy a dirty look. It was clear that she hadn't forgotten Candy's little warning.

Candy was annoyed with herself and embarrassed by her little tirade. She needed to learn to keep her mouth shut. She ran her hand through her hair and realized that she needed to go back upstairs and finish getting ready. She'd left her hot rollers on.

“If you don't mind, I'm going to go on up and finish getting ready,” she told Spike. She stole a glance at Buffy before leaving.

It was obvious that some sort of exchange had occurred. “You two have a nice chat then?” Spike asked Buffy.

Dawn piped in, “Yeah when I came in Candy was telling Buffy how she wanted to be the mother of your children.”

“Vampires can't have children,” Buffy informed her.

“I know that. It was a joke. Geez.”

With perfect timing, Connor walked in. “Dad!” he called out as he pushed the doors in.

Oh this was just delicious. Spike leaned back in his chair, folded his arms and watched. Let's see Angel explain this.
