Chapter Five ~ Action Heroes & Showers
Spike took the exit from the freeway to the Hyperion and he couldn‘t get there fast enough. Candy's hand was resting on his thigh and it was driving him crazy. By the smile on her face, she knew it too. He was about to tell her that she would pay for all that teasing when her phone rang. She flipped it open, spoke for a minute and then handed it to him.
“It’s Angel. He says it's important.”
Figures. They were just pulling up to the hotel. The poof had a way of messing up his plans and tonight would be no exception.
He closed her phone and handed it back to her. “Looks like I’m needed at the center. Angel will be out in a minute. You can go in if you want.” Angel was running out of the front doors. He was loaded down with weapons, but he somehow made a graceful leap into the back seat.
“Looks like I’m coming along,” Candy said. She turned back and asked, “Got something there I could use?”
Spike darted into traffic and Angel got them caught up on the situation. Gunn and Illyria had found the vamp nest, but it had been empty. The gang was already at the center and by the time Gunn and Illyria had gotten there, the vamps had made a mess of the place. The kids had fought back as they were taught how, but a few of them didn’t make it. The vampires had taken Anne and Illyria traced them back to the nest. The two fighters had stormed the warehouse and Gunn got knocked out. Illyria dragged him out and had called Angel for backup and he remembered that he had Candy’s number.
When they pulled up to the warehouse, Spike could see a bit of blue hair come up over a junk car on the side. When they walked up, Gunn was just coming around.
“I’m glad to see you're still kicking, but there’s no way you're up to this fight now,” Spike said as Gunn tried to get up. His injured arm looked worse and he could barely stand.
“Spike’s right, Gunn. Illyria, get him to the car and then meet us inside,” said Angel. “Are you sure you are up to this, Candy?” he asked her.
Candy was about to speak when Spike said, “Vi says she fights like me. She’s in. Come on peaches, Anne’s in there. No time to talk it out now.”
Spike kicked at the doors a few times, but they wouldn’t budge. Angel sighed in agitation and pushed Spike out of the way. He tried once to kick the door in himself, but by this time Illyria caught up to them. “No time to play, vampires. Anne is important to Gunn. We must get her back.” With that, she turned the handles and tossed the doors open.
Candy choke backed her laughter at Spike and Angel's incredulous expressions. She held her crossbow at the ready and followed Illyria in.
Anne was sitting and tied to a chair towards the back of the huge open space. The three souled ones could sense vampires all around. Most of them were at the upper level, hiding in wait. The place was quiet except for the sounds Anne was making through the gag in her mouth. From the shadows a badly dressed, 70’s reject vampire stepped out and behind Anne. He placed his hands on her shoulders.
“Stupid, traitors. I knew you’d come,” the vampire said. “You vile abominations. You make me sick!” He shook a fist at them. “She’s blood on a stick. You’re supposed to eat them, not save them!”
Candy rolled her eyes and looked to Angel and Spike. She could see vamps moving in behind them. Now she was angry. This was going to end. She wanted to get back to the hotel and finish what they’d started on the beach. This sleazy piece of crap vamp was slowing things down. Her face morphed as her demon took over. She trained her bow on the leader behind Anne's chair, just as he stepped slightly to the left. She had an open shot and she took it. Her aim was dead on and his dust flittered to the ground.
It was quiet for a second and then all hell broke loose. Angel shouted for Illyria to get Anne out as his stake hit home and a vamp that was coming at him exploded. There was dust everywhere now and they were still coming at them. She was amazed at how fast Spike and Angel were, fighting side by side. She had managed to reload once and get a shot off at a vamp as he jumped from the top floor railing towards Anne below. He screamed and dusted before he could hit the ground.
She was trying to reload a third time when a huge vamp grabbed at the cross bow. She swung it at him and let it go so she could grab the stake tucked away in her belt. He grabbed her around the throat and she pulled back a bit and shoved the stake up. He let go in shock and disintegrated. Illyria had Anne out of the chair and they were making their way towards a back exit. They appeared safe enough. The remaining vamps were taking off in fear or attacking Spike and Angel so she ran and jumped right in.
Spike was swinging his sword smiling and having a grand old time. “Six!” He yelled out.
“Eight!” Angel ground out as he staked another one.
Candy guessed that they were yelling out the number of vamps they had gotten rid of. She thought maybe they kept count for records so she added, “Four!”
Spike and Angel looked at each other and grinned. There was one vampire left and he looked at them wide eyed. He figured he’d make a hasty exit. He thought his sire was the most insane vampire around, he was dust now and most of his fellow minions were too. He wasn’t going to stick around and let these crazy vampires get a hold of him. He turned to run, but Candy had other ideas. She tossed her stake at his back.
“Bulls eye!” She jumped up and down and ran to retrieve her stake from the dust. “That’s five.”
Spike rushed up to her, picked her up by her waist and twirled her around. “That was fun wasn’t it?”
Her laughter echoed through the warehouse. “Yes, it was.” She morphed back to her human face.
He lowered her down, but she kept her eyes trained on his. His face was bright and animated, but what really got her juices flowing was the devilish glint in his eyes. She had to look away or she knew she’d beg him to take her right there.
“Where’s Angel?”
Spike looked around. “Guess he went to check on Anne. Come on.” He grabbed her hand and they made their way through the double doors. Angel was walking across the street and didn’t see or even sense the two vampires quickly closing in on him. Candy opened her mouth to give warning, but Spike put his hand over her mouth. He grabbed her stake and took his own out of his jacket. He rushed them and staked them both from the back at the same time. Angel turned around in time to see them turn to dust.
“That’s eight for me,” Spike deadpanned.
“It’s a tie. You still haven’t beaten me.” Angel turned and walked to the car.
“Hey!” Spike called after him, “I saved your bloody arse, once again. Don’t I get a thank you?”
“Whatever, Spike.” Angel waved him off. “Why don’t you and Candy take Gunn and his car back to the hotel? We’ll take Anne back and deal with the clean up.” He settled his gaze on Candy. “That was a foolish move back there with the crossbow. You could've hit Anne.”
She shrugged and her face was a mask of indifference. “I'm a good shot with a crossbow. That's why I chose it.”
They helped Gunn in to the back seat and took off. The injured man glared at Candy but said, “That was pretty smooth, Spike. Two at once,” and promptly fell asleep.
When they arrived, Candy suggested that they carry a sleeping Gunn to his room. Spike was against it. He knew Charlie would want to get there on his own. They woke him up and he stumbled up the stairs complaining about keeping vampire hours and not getting to rest until it was almost dawn. Spike disappeared into the kitchen for a moment and came out with some blood. He handed her a mug and they downed the contents.
She made a face as she lowered the cup. “Not to be rude or anything, but don’t you guys ever get any of the good stuff?”
“And the good stuff would be?”
“O positive or A positive, of the human variety.”
“Nope. LA hospitals are always in short supply of blood, so we try not to put a strain on the system. Besides, Angel thinks it’s bad for us to be feeding on human blood when our business is to help them.” Spike rolled his eyes. “Come on. I’ve seen your room. Now I’ll show you mine.” He arched his brow and smirked.
She followed Spike up the stairs, wishing he didn’t have that duster on. She just knew he had a fine backside. It was a shame to cover it with all that leather. He found his key and inserted it into the lock. He hesitated and looked back at her. She smiled and bit down on her lower lip. He turned the key and held the door open for her.
It was a basic suite with an open sitting room and a set of double doors that most likely led to the bedroom. What wasn’t basic was the decor. Black sheets covered the two couches and a couple of red satin pillows were placed on top of the sheets. There were books and magazines and what looked like a hand held video game system on the coffee table. On one wall there hung a huge plasma TV. The other walls had art work that definitely didn’t come with the room originally. The room would have really said “Spike, the Vampire”, if it weren’t for the industrial grade blue carpet and grungy off-white curtains.
“Needs a little work,” she said. “Perhaps some curtains…”
“Well, I’m not real concerned about the decor. This is just a temporary dwelling.” Spike hung his duster on the coat rack. “'Sides, my room’s a lot better. Care to take a gander?”
She threw open the double doors. It was dark in there, but she could tell, it was all black and red silk. Spike flicked his Zippo and lit a few candles.
“Very original,” she said dryly. “And what in blazes are you doing?” He was at the edge of the bed and was bent over.
“’m taken off me boots,” he quipped. He tossed one and then the other in the direction of the open closet.
“So, I’m guessing you don’t want to play then?” she said as he was advancing on her now and she backed up until she reached the wall.
“Never said I didn’t want to play, luv. Just not child’s games.”
She was trembling in anticipation now and he wrapped his fingers in her belt loops and yanked her close. She slapped her hands on his chest and pushed him towards the bed.
Hours later, Candy watched Spike lean over the bed to light a cigarette. “You got one of those for me?”
“You smoke?” He sounded surprised, but handed her the one he had just lit and started up another.
“Yeah. Not as often as I used to. Certain moments call for it.” She took a deep drag and held the smoke for a moment. He leaned back so that they were shoulder to shoulder and they enjoyed their smokes in companionable silence. When she was done, she ground the butt in the ash tray on her side of the bed. She swung her legs over the edge. “You wore me out, but I can’t sleep.”
“How about a shower?” Spike asked with a hopeful expression. “We can help each other get all fresh again.”
“That sounds divine,” Candy said with a sigh. Here was the awkward part. “Am I staying the night?”
He walked around to her side, helped her up and placed his hands on her shoulders. “I’d be offended if you left now. Please stay.” He tensed up and his grip tightened.
“Well, I certainly wouldn’t want to offend.” She leaned in and gave him a quick kiss.
He relaxed. “Oh good. I didn’t fancy hav’n to tie you to the bed.” He paused. “Well, maybe I do, but you know, not on the first night.” He gave her a brilliant smile and just the way he tilted his head made her knees buckle. He caught her as she began to slink down. “Made you weak, did I?” She laughed at that as they made their way to the surprisingly plush bathroom.
It was the most amazing shower she’d ever had. Spike brought one of the pillar candles with him and set it on the counter. It was like she was in a dream. He murmured soft beautiful things to her in his deep rumbling voice. The steam rose around them as the hot water rained down. They slowly soaped each other up and slipped and slid together as they kissed.
When he asked to wash her hair, she looked at him as if he was daft. Spike told her he knew he was a ponce but he just was itching to do it. So she let him and it turned out to be a very sensual experience. Spike responded to her moans of pleasure as he massaged her scalp with his amazing hands.
When he turned the water off, they slowly dried each other with soft towels and made their way back to the bed, where sleep was the last thing on their minds.
