Chapter 13 ~ Interrogation Tactics
Spike hung up the phone and stood up. The blinds were up on the office window. He could see Buffy and Gunn having a chat in the lobby. Would she be happy about what he was doing for her? It didn't matter. Red couldn't say for sure when she'd be able to get here, but she had some ideas and as soon as she could get away, she would. He put his hand on the back of his neck and rubbed. Even if he called Red back and ask her to stop, she wouldn't. She was on a roll now and there was nothing holding her back.
Things were pretty quiet in the week since Giles had left for London. Buffy decided to stay another two weeks, until Dawn started school. Spike was glad he didn't have to encourage her to stay. Candy didn't know yet what he had in the works and she wouldn't take too kindly to him begging Buffy to stay on. If he had to guess, he'd say that Buffy was just staying because of Angel and also to avoid going back to deal with The Immortal. Dawn was barely around. Conner picked her up every day and they were in and out of the hotel.
Buffy was helping with their cases, which were coming in frequently now. Word was out on the street that they were back in business and they didn't lack for clients. It was great to have some cash flow. When Buffy suggested that they take on a few slayers, only Gunn thought it was a good idea. She'd talk Angel into it eventually though and if things worked out, Buffy would be one of them. The challenge would be keeping the council out of their business.
Spike was bored so he made his way to the basement to workout. Candy was out on a shopping trip and wouldn't be back for some time. They were going to have to make a trip to Cleveland and get her things. He didn't look forward to being face to face with Robin again, but Candy and Faith were friends and they would have to say goodbye. He'd talked to her on the phone the other day when Candy had called her. Faith wanted them to move out that way. She could use the help, she'd said. They politely declined, but agreed to come by often.
Angel was pummeling the bag in the workout room. Spike shed his duster and began to do some pull ups. The dark vampire moved to the weight bench and straddled it.
“Candy says you guys are thinking of doing some traveling,” Angel said.
Spike dropped to the floor and stretched. “We've talked about it. She needs to go back to Cleveland and pick up her stuff. We thought it might be nice to extend the trip and see some of the country.”
“We'll keep your suite for you,” was all Angel said. It was enough. He was saying that they were always welcome in LA.
“Thanks mate. We haven't set a definite date to leave yet. I've got some things that need taking care of first. We will consider this place home base if you don't mind. And you know we'll be back here in a flash if you get wind of another plot to end the world,” he said it in a lighthearted manner, but it was obvious that he meant it.
“So,” Angel began as he looked pointedly at him, “are you going to tell me what all the calls back and forth with Willow are about?”
Spike knew he was starting to suspect something and he tried not to look guilty. Twice in the last week, Willow had called for Spike and Angel had been the one to answer the phone.
Spike didn't have time to comment. Gunn made a racket as he practically fell down the stairs. “We've got company. A vamp.”
The two vampires straighten up and grabbed their jackets. Gunn explained on the way up how this fool vampire with an Italian accent had burst into the lobby calling out for Buffy. Angel and Spike shared a look. If it was The Immortal, things could get real interesting. They'd never been able to get the best of him in the past and what was worse--The Immortal never had to try real hard. Buffy was up there right now with him. They would have to find a way to distract him while one of them got to the weapons cabinet.
As it turned out, the idiot was distracted enough. He had his back to them. He stood tall and imposing in a dark gray tailored suit. He looked even taller than Spike remembered, standing so close to Buffy. Spike had to hold Angel back and motion for Gunn to slide over to the weapons chest.
“What are you doing here?” Buffy asked the oaf incredulously.
“I know. Can you believe it? I haven't been out of Italy for thirty years and this is my first trip to the new world. I'd do anything for you, piccina.”
The Immortal droned on, waving his hands dramatically. “You must come back with me. I've missed you.”
“She's going nowhere with you,” Angel stated as he caught the ax flying through the air at him.
Gunn tossed a sword to Spike and came around the other side behind Buffy. The odds were good at four to one. Spike wasn't optimistic though, because The Immortal never traveled with out escorts and guards. He could not sense them, but he had a feeling they'd be crashing the party soon.
The Immortal turned to face them and his eyes crinkled in mirth. “Liam, William, we meet again. What are you bumbling fools doing here?” He snapped his fingers and six minions filed into the lobby.
Buffy looked around and took a quick assessment of the situation. “Don't kill The Immortal, the others are fair game,” she yelled as she went to work. Gunn followed and began hacking away.
“See I knew it was no mistake to come find you, cara. I knew you cared.” The Immortal backed away to get out of the fighting.
Spike was about to jump in with Buffy and Gunn to even the odds out a bit, but Illyria jumped from the second floor landing and knocked down two vampires at once. The odds were even now. He shrugged and turned back to The Immortal. The big guy's attention was focused on Buffy, but Spike watched Angel as he grabbed a set of chains. It was time for Spike to do what he did best. Well there were a few things he was even better at, but only a few ladies had the privilege to know that.
“You don't have a chance with her you bloody git!” he yelled at him. The Immortal tore his eyes from Buffy and focused on Spike. “She's here for me. She found out I was alive and she dumped your sorry arse for a real vamp.” He liked this. He bounced on his heels and let out an evil laugh. “So go back to where you came from, you nancy boy.” Angel was just behind him now. Spike sprung forward and attempted to knock The Immortal into Angel's outstretched arms with the chains. The Immortal stepped cleanly out of the way and Spike went crashing into Angel instead. They both went down.
They sprang up as fast as they could. The Immortal stood there looking bored. “Are you two through playing games now?” he asked.
The minions were all piles of dust now. Illyria grabbed the chain from Angel and roped the Immortal in a flash. He couldn't move his arms and for the first time that night he looked a little concerned. Angel used another set of chains to whip around his ankles and Buffy grabbed the chain at his waist and pulled it tighter.
“Okay, I've had enough of you. You've been driving me crazy for months now,” Buffy told the dandy.
“Why is he still standing here then, Buffy? Let's dust him and get it over with.” Spike was anxious to be rid of him.
“Not before we get some information from him,” she told them. “Where can we put him?”
They carried him down to the basement and chained him to the wall proper. He was silent but glared at them all. Illyria was bored already so she went back up stairs. Gunn took a seat on the weight bench to watch.
“So,” Buffy began, “let's hear it. Where is Ms. Trentham? Did you turn her or dump her body somewhere?”
The Immortal was on the verge of saying something. He hesitated and looked from Spike to Angel then he fixed Buffy with a pathetic stare. “I love you,” he told her. “I have been more patient with you than any woman I have ever encountered.” Buffy's shoulders dropped and she looked up. “I have made sacrifice after sacrifice for you, yet this is the thanks I get?” His chains rattled as he gestured.
Spike was amused and yet felt pity for the creature at the same time. Was he this pathetic back in the day? Maybe so, but he wasn't the one is chains. A picture of a brassed-off slayer chained up in his crypt filtered into his mind. He laughed out loud at the memory, but he sobered right up when he caught the death glare that Buffy threw his way.
“She asked you a question,” Angel said.
They all turned to see Candy coming down the stairs when they heard the click clack of her heels. “Illyria said you all were torturing a vampire down here. Can I watch?” she asked. She'd never seen an interrogation and it sounded like fun. “Hey,” she said as she stopped short and pointed at the vamp in chains. “That's him! Gaston!”
“I beg your pardon,” the Immortal said. He puffed out his chest, “My name is not Gaston. And don't I know you?”
Buffy stood in front of the Immortal and blocked his view of Candy. “Look, tell me about Ms. Trentham or I’m going to have to beat it out of you.”
“How could you say such a thing?” he pleaded with Buffy.
“Oh good, he's not talking. Please can I beat him?” Candy asked Buffy.
Buffy gave way and waved her hand at The Immortal like a Price is Right model.
Candy stood before him and grabbed his hand. “Your hands,” she looked from his hand to his eyes. “They are just like I remember them. Do you remember me?”
“You are a very beautiful woman and I know that I have seen you before. I can't quite place it,” he admitted. He smiled at her with all his charm and persuasion.
“Let's see if I can jar your memory.” She snapped his pinky in a clean break and he yelled out. “Anzio, World War II. The last time I saw you, you were flying through the air after I bitch slapped you.”
His eyes widened. “You!” he exclaimed. “I'm surprised you have survived this long,” he said bitterly.
“It seems that you need a little more help with your memory,” she said as she snapped the next finger. He yelled out louder this time. Gunn was cringing behind her and she could sense that Buffy was ready to jump in with some mercy. She wanted to play bad cop a little longer. It was fun. “I believe the slayer asked you about a Ms. Trentham?”
"What the hell is going on here? What is so important about a dead watcher?" The Immortal directed the questions to Buffy with pleading eyes. "I know you care about me." Buffy just stared back at him with resolve. “She's dead and gone. Dumped over a cliff into the ocean. Fish food,” he admitted. He leaned back thinking it was over. He looked at Buffy imploringly. “That was before I met you, Bella.”
“Shoot, that was too easy,” Candy said in disappointment. “I was hoping to move on to knee caps.” She smiled at Spike...and then turned back to The Immortal. He was a pathetic figure, chained up in the dark basement. His handsome face twisted in pain. He looked up at her with death and malice in his eyes. She needed to know one thing. “Where is my sire?”
The Immortal's eyes widened in shock. “You know?”
“I know,” she told him. “Where is Evans?”
He sought Buffy out with his eyes, “Buffy, darling, please unchain me,” he pleaded. “I'll take you away from here and take care of you.”
Buffy leaned against the weight machine and folded her arms. "Could you be any more clueless? And we used to tease Xander about being a demon magnet." She looked over at Spike. "Yet, he is married to a sweet slayer girl and I'm the one stuck with another obsessed vampire." Buffy glared at the Immortal. "Just tell her what she wants to know.”
“Evans has gone the way of all willful childer,” he told them flippantly. “The bischero was determined to go back and get you. He didn't want to leave you to your own, but that was the whole point! When he insisted, I ran a stake through his heart. Problem solved. End of story.”
“Alright, which one of us gets to off Gaston here?” Spike asked. “Who wants it more?” He raised his hand. All but Gunn raised their hands as well. “Well, a vamp can only dust once, unless he's me.”
~*~*~*~
Buffy, being the leader she was, made the decision. Gunn felt a little weird to be dusting a vamp while it was chained. It almost didn't seem fair. He shrugged and gripped the stake tighter. The others didn't stick around to see it. When he came up a few minutes later, Candy was running the vacuum and Buffy was in the office making a phone call. Angel and Spike were polishing the weapons so that they could be placed back in the cabinet. It was just all in a day's work for them.
~*~*~*~
Candy was happy to have something to do. It was a bit of a let down to know her sire was gone. Then again, it made things easier. She would never have to face him. She shut the machine off and observed Spike, Angel and Gunn by the weapons cabinet while she wound the cord. They all looked pleased with themselves.
“For a vamp that went by the name The Immortal, he sure was easy to get rid of,” Gunn remarked.
“He gave himself that name,” Angel informed him.
“Pillock could call himself anything he liked, doesn't make it so. 'sides, the poofter was a coward not a fighter. He had others do his dirty work and kept his hands clean. He'd rather be shagging anything that crossed his path than fight. Then again, that's not a bad way to live.”
Spike looked at Candy and smiled. He placed a booted foot onto a ledge and leaned casually on his thigh as he tried to focus on the conversation. That reminded Candy of her packages by the stairs. She quickly replaced the vacuum in the supply closet and gathered her many bags. Spike tended to follow her where ever she went, so she would need to hurry. Especially with what was on his mind at the moment.
She threw all the bags but one onto the bed and after much searching, she found a place to hide the one bag out of sight. She was just getting ready to put her other things away when Spike came in. “Okay, let me see your pretties, then. And what did you get for me?”
She started dumping the contents out of the bags. “Was I supposed to get you anything?”
“Of course. I know you did. What is it?” He started rummaging through the pile on the bed.
“I'm not telling. You can't make me,” she said petulantly.
“Oh see, I just love a challenge. You forget, I just watched you get information out of someone. Perhaps a little strong arm tactics would work on you,” he said with an evil grin.
“You stay away from me, Spike,” she teased him. It really turned her on when he got that crazed look.
She tried running but didn't get very far and he was able to grab her by the waist. “There are other ways to get what I want. Can I earn it?” he asked. She shook her head. She wasn't going to give him what she bought until the time was right.
“Very well then, torture it is.” Spike threw her on the bed and proceeded to tickle her.
Some one obviously took her screams to heart. They were pounding on the door. Spike stopped and she was able to get up. She ran for the door, glad for the distraction that might get his mind off presents. They were laughing when she opened the door. Gunn stood there with his mouth open.
“What is going on? I thought some one was being attacked,” the tall man asked.
“You were correct, Gunn. You saved me. Now tell this big baby to leave me alone.”
Spike stood behind Candy with his hands on her hips. He raised one eyebrow suggestively when Gunn just stood there. Candy let out a giggle.
Gunn turned and walked away. They leaned out the door and watched him. “Stupid, freaky vampires. Why do I try? They aren't right in the head. All up there torturing each other and 'ha ha' we scared the human.”
